ChatGPT prompt to turn a braindump into a clear brief

This is the prompt we run when we have dumped our ideas voice-note style and someone else needs to act on them. Its core rule: it turns the ramble into a clear brief and flags anything ambiguous instead of deciding for you.

The prompt to copy

Below is an unstructured braindump. Turn it into a clear brief for {who will act on it}: objective, context (3 lines max), exactly what to do, what "done" looks like, deadline, open questions back to me. Flag anything ambiguous rather than deciding yourself. Braindump: {paste}

Replace the field in curly braces with the person who will act on it, then paste your dump as-is: fragments, tangents, and all.

When to use it

Whenever you have the idea in your head but no time to shape it, and someone else has to pick it up: an instruction dictated between meetings, a scribbled brief, a transcribed voice note. The prompt does the sorting so the person receiving it does not have to guess what you meant.

What you get back

1. An objective in one line.
2. The useful context, in three lines max.
3. Exactly what to do, and what “done” looks like.
4. The deadline, and the questions your dump left open.

Real example: voice note → brief

Input: a dump dictated by Maya, who runs Brightside, for Léa. An excerpt, as-is:

ok so for the client Fernhill Coffee we need to redo the products page, the current one is unreadable on mobile, Léa can you take it? needs to be clean before the new range launches, I think it's end of month but check with them. oh and we need to ask for their HD photos, we don't have them

Output, the part that matters:

Objective: rebuild Fernhill Coffee's products page, readable on mobile.
Who acts: Léa.

Context: the current page renders badly on mobile. Rebuild expected before the new range launches.

What to do:
- Rework the products page, mobile display first.
- Ask the client for their HD photos (we don't have them).

"Done": products page readable on mobile, HD photos in, approved before launch.

Deadline: TBC ("end of month" mentioned, confirm with the client).

Questions back to you:
- Is the new range's launch date really end of month?

Notice what the AI did not do: it did not lock “end of month” in as a firm deadline, because the dump said “check with them”. It marked it “TBC” and raised it as a question. That is the prompt working: it hands the decision back to you instead of guessing.
